About this product

Condition: Digital product. You get a download link, nothing is shipped.

Exactly the same as the USB stick, just as a file
This is the same RepairGuyDK Installer for Home Assistant that I sell on a USB stick, but here you get it as an ISO file that you write to your own USB stick. The installer turns an ordinary PC or mini PC into a Home Assistant server. You start the PC from the stick, answer a few questions in your own language, and it installs Home Assistant OS on the PC's disk for you. The content is exactly the same: the installer, the guide and the RepairGuyDK program that connects AI to your home.

Choose your language: 8 languages
The installer, the guide and the program are available in Danish, English, Swedish, Norwegian, German, Dutch, Spanish and French. Choose the language above before you add the item to your cart. You get the ISO file in the language you choose.

You write it yourself with balenaEtcher or Rufus
After your purchase you get a link to the ISO file. You can write it with one of two free programs. Everything on the USB stick is erased, so use a stick without anything important on it.

With balenaEtcher (Windows, Mac and Linux):

  1. Download balenaEtcher and start it.
  2. Click Flash from file and choose the ISO file.
  3. Click Select target and choose your USB stick.
  4. Click Flash! and wait a few minutes until it is done.

With Rufus (Windows only): Insert the USB stick, download Rufus and start it. Click Yes if Windows asks. Then there are only three things to do (the screenshots show Rufus in Danish, the buttons are in the same place in every language):

1Click SELECT and choose the ISO file you downloaded
The SELECT button is next to Boot selection. Check that your USB stick is shown under Device. Leave everything else as it is.

2Click START
The button is at the bottom of Rufus.

3Choose Write in DD Image mode and click OK
Rufus has Write in ISO Image mode (Recommended) selected by default. Do not use it, because then the PC cannot start from the stick. Click Write in DD Image mode and click OK.

Click OK to the warning that everything on the stick will be erased. Wait until the bar under Status is green and says READY. Then the stick is done and you can close Rufus.

What are you actually paying for?
Let's be honest: Home Assistant OS is free and open source, and you can download it from home-assistant.io. What you pay for here is everything around it that makes it easy: an installer in your own language that checks your PC and guides you, a step by step guide, and the RepairGuyDK program that connects AI to your home.

An installer that thinks for you
Before anything happens, the installer checks that the PC is set up correctly. If it is in Legacy mode or Secure Boot is on, it stops and tells you what to change in the BIOS. It finds the internal disk itself, so the USB stick can never be chosen by mistake. If the PC has several internal disks, you choose the right one from a list. You must type a confirmation word in capital letters (YES in English) before the disk is erased. Home Assistant OS is inside the file, so the installation itself also works without internet.

Guide and AI right away
When the installation is done, the screen shows a QR code to repairguydk.com, where you choose the guide in your language. If you put the stick in a Windows PC, you find the REPAIRGUYDK drive with the guide and the RepairGuyDK program that connects Claude to your Home Assistant. Afterwards you can write "turn off the lights in the living room" or "make an automation that turns on the outdoor light at sunset", and Claude does it for you. It works with a free Claude account.

Writing fails? Reset the USB stick with Diskpart
If balenaEtcher or Rufus reports an error, or the PC will not start from the stick, it often helps to reset the stick in Windows first. Diskpart erases everything on the disk you choose without asking, so remove all other USB drives and external disks, so only the stick is connected.

  1. Right click the Start button and choose Terminal (Admin). Click Yes when Windows asks.

  2. Type diskpart and press Enter.

  3. Type list disk and press Enter. Find the USB stick by its size. In the picture below it is Disk 10 with 7680 MB (about 7.6 GB). The big disks with hundreds or thousands of GB are your hard drives, and you must never choose them.
Diskpart list disk with the USB stick Disk 10 marked in red
  4. Type select disk 10 (use your own stick's number) and press Enter. Type list disk again and check that the star * is next to the USB stick.

  5. Type these one at a time after DISKPART> and press Enter after each line:

    clean
    create partition primary
    format fs=exfat quick
    assign
    exit

  6. The stick is now empty and ready. Write the ISO file with balenaEtcher or Rufus again.

If clean gives an error, remove the stick, insert it again and start over from step 2.

Please note

  • You get a file, not a USB stick. You need your own USB stick of at least 4 GB and must write the file with balenaEtcher or Rufus.
  • The file is large, so download it on a good internet connection.
  • The whole disk in the PC you install on is erased. Use a PC you do not need for anything else.
  • The PC must be able to start in UEFI mode with Secure Boot turned off. Most PCs from the last 10 years can.
  • The PC needs wired internet the first time Home Assistant starts, because it downloads the last parts (about 1 GB).
  • USB stick, PC, network cable, Zigbee dongle and Claude account are not included.
  • The AI program requires a Windows PC with Claude Desktop, or Home Assistant Cloud (Nabu Casa) to use Claude in the browser and on your phone.
  • You have the statutory warranty rights in your country. Right of withdrawal and terms are in our terms and conditions.
  • Licenses and source code: The file contains Home Assistant OS and a small Debian Linux system, both open source (Apache 2.0, GPL and others). The licenses and links to the source code are in the license file on the stick (LICENSES.txt in the English version). You can also write to repairguydk@gmail.com and get the source code.
  • This is not an official Home Assistant product and is not endorsed by or affiliated with the Open Home Foundation or Nabu Casa. Home Assistant is a trademark of the Open Home Foundation. Installer, guide and program are made by RepairGuyDK.
